Radio stations in Georgia

Radio Broadcasting | New Georgia Encyclopedia

The Georgia Bulldog Radio Network has long been one of the nation's largest, with over 75 affiliates, and has set the standard of excellence in its coverage of college football.

For the 43rd straight season, the legendary Larry Munson will call the action from Sanford Stadium. He'll be joined on the Bulldog broadcasts by WNGC/WGAU sports director Scott Howard, who handles the color analyst's duties. Loran Smith and WSB Radio's Neil "Hondo" Williamson team to host the popular pre-game "Tailgate Show." In addition, Smith serves as sideline color commentator, while Williamson adds pre-game and halftime features. For Georgia's road games, Howard will team with former Bulldog great Eric Zeier on the broadcast.

The network flagship is Atlanta's News/Talk 750 WSB, under the direction of David Meszaros. The football broadcasts are produced by WSB AM Sports, and the station's signal reaches more than 35 states and Canada within the North American continent. Bulldog fans throughout the world can also listen to each broadcast via GXtra.

The 2008 season will mark the second year that Georgia football games have been aired on satellite radio. The Southeastern Conference and XM Radio, the leader in college sports on the radio, in 2007 began a five-year broadcast and marketing agreement under which XM became the official satellite radio provider of the SEC. All Georgia Bulldog football games, as well as the vast majority of basketball games and selected other sports, are available to XM subscribers nationwide.

Larry Munson has been broadcasting Georgia football games since 1966. He also called the play-by-play for Georgia basketball from 1987-96. His dramatic style and unabashed partisanship for the Bulldogs have endeared him to generations of listeners. Munson's legendary status was recognized in 2003 with the National Football Foundation on Chris Schenkel Award.

Starting at the age of 20, Munson has built a career that covers a wide range of sporting events. Not only has he called the shots for major-college football, but he's also broadcasted major- and minor-league baseball, as well as college basketball. He also spent 23 years on a weekly fishing show and served a stint as a Nashville, Tenn., disc jockey.

Before he became the "Voice of the Dogs, " Munson had established one of the most reputable careers in sports broadcasting. He served as the play-by-play announcer for University of Wyoming football and basketball, the Nashville Vols of the Southern Association (baseball), Vanderbilt football and basketball for 16 years and was a member of the original Atlanta Braves broadcast team when they moved from Milwaukee. Munson, in fact, got the Georgia football broadcasting job just after he had arrived in Florida for spring training with that first Braves team.
